Your Voice Matters

“Sing to the LORD a new song, And His praise in the assembly of saints.” (Psalm 149:1) When you read Scriptures exhorting us to sing to the Lord—do you think that refers to you, or just for the worship team who have great voices? Many people think their voice sound terrible, and subconsciously decide the Scripture is referring only to the gifted ones. What if I told you that is one of the biggest lies of the enemy to stop one of the most powerful sounds on earth?

 Your voice MAtters 2

What if I remind you that as a worship leader—I cannot worship for you? Only you can worship the Lord for you. And only you can follow the exhortation to sing to the Lord for you.

We hosted a workshop about singing the Scriptures. After teaching, there were practical application, where I asked everyone to sing a Scripture. The first person did okay. The second person hesitated, then refused. Then the 3rd and the 4th persons. We stopped. Every person in the group had a belief their voice was awful—including musicians and singers! Each person had a false belief built upon words from a teacher, parent, or someone important, spoken to them when they were young. Effectively, a curse was spoken at a critical stage of life. ‘You should not sing.’ ‘Your voice is terrible.’ Lovers of God were unable to sing Scripture because of a lie planted in the heart of a young child. The rest of the workshop was spent breaking curses, and praying for deep wounds to be healed.

This is the most common way the enemy seeks to silence us. Your voice matters. To say or believe otherwise is a lie from the pit. You voice carries your DNA, your testimony, and who you are in God! Corporate praise of every believer is one of the most effective and potent weapons God has given.

The most severe hindrance to God’s people lifting their voices—are spiritual, and emotional, rarely physical. In my experience as a music teacher, and from research, the percentage of those who are truly ‘tone-deaf’, have a physical condition which prevents them singing in tune is 1-4 % of the population. For most people, if they are encouraged and practice – they can tune their instrument!

If you still feel insecure about the sound of your voice, then be encouraged by the Hebrew word used in Psalm 149: 5. Of several different Hebrew words used for sing and song, the word for sing loudly in verse 5 is ranan. The root of the word means to creak, emit a strident sound! If you feel your voice creaks or is strident—you are covered! All jokes aside, this verse contains another powerful encouragement.

Some look at this verse and say, it mostly reads as, “Let them sing aloud on their beds”.  Oh good; I can just sing in the shower, the prayer closet, or where no one else can hear me. The Passion Translation renders it as songs of praise that rise “even while others sleep”. This means with all our time zones; songs of praises can ascend to the throne 24/7 across the globe. And it doesn’t matter whether you think your voice creaks or is worthy of a grammy award—all believers are called to sing His praise. As Jesus said, if His followers do not sing His praises—the task will be left to the rocks! (Luke 19:40)

The most powerful sound on the earth, that terrifies hell, is when every single person who has been redeemed—sings praises to the worthy Lamb whose blood redeemed us. When it is done corporately—it is like the sound of many waters as described in Revelation.

The first worship leader in heaven, Lucifer, had wind instruments and percussion instruments in him—as part of his body.[1] God gave the human race an instrument inside our bodies too—it is our voice! We activate it by choice. We choose which mode to use. We choose to speak, whisper, shout, cry, or sing. Choose today; let your voice be heard singing His praises.

The new sound the Holy Spirit is urging and awaiting, is not a new hit from Bethel or Hillsong. It is not a song from a particular ethnic group. As good as these all might be, it is not the sound the earth needs to hear. It is not the sound that will penetrate darkness.

Redeemed and sanctified believers corporately joining their physical voices to sing His praises—is dangerous to the kingdom of darkness. When we corporately sing in tongues there is an exquisite sound. It is a sound and a language that transcends human emotion, and demonic interference.

When Jesus was declared worthy to open the seals, everyone on earth and heaven sings to Him.

“Then every living being joined the angelic choir. Every creature in heaven and on earth, under the earth, in the sea, and everything in them, were worshiping with one voice, saying: “Praise, honor, glory, and dominion be to God-Enthroned and to Christ the Lamb forever and ever!” (Revelation 5:13 TPT)

No wonder the enemy want to tell you your voice doesn’t matter, or it sounds terrible. Your voice joining with heaven is key in releasing the judgments of God against the enemy.  What can we do?

  • If you do not sing because of believing lies spoken over you, you must break agreement with the devil. Ask Holy Spirit to expose the root, break the curse, pray healing, and release His truth.
  • In Jesus name break the silence off your voice. Break off the fear to sing, the fear of hearing your voice.
  • Worship teams be encouraged to pick congregation friendly songs that enable all to be engage as activate participants.
  • Choose to honour Him. Lift Him up regardless of how it sounds to you–He is Worthy! If you have tried and failed; pray, get up and try again.
